SWING FOR A CAUSE

Royal and Caicos Golf Club Hosts Successful Wine Cellar Golf & Fishing Tournament

Over the weekend, the Royal and Caicos Golf Club was abuzz with excitement as golf enthusiasts teed off for the 13th Annual Wine Cellar Tournament. The event, a highlight of the club’s calendar, brought together 100 golfers in a spirited display of skill and camaraderie, all in the name of charity.

The tournament, organized in a 4-man scramble format, showcased impressive talent on the green, with the winning team clinching victory with a remarkable score of 127.92. Led by Ted Bayley, Tony Arata, Graham Canham, and Vaughan Paisley, their performance was nothing short of stellar.

Yet, beyond the thrill of competition, the true triumph of the event lay in its philanthropic mission. Thanks to the generosity of participants and sponsors alike, an astounding $481,000 has been raised thus far. These funds are earmarked for the Edward C. Gartland Youth Centre, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing a safe and enriching environment for the youth of Providenciales.

The impact of this support cannot be overstated. The Youth Centre offers a diverse array of after-school activities, ranging from tutoring to sports, recreation, arts, and crafts. For many young individuals, it serves as a beacon of opportunity and a hub for personal growth.

A heartfelt thank you is owed to the event’s sponsors, whose unwavering commitment made the tournament’s success possible. From Royal Turks and Caicos Golf Club to Blue Haven Marina, and headline sponsors including Carlisle Supplies, Casablanca Casino, Jais, TCI Lotto, and TCI Paint, their contributions have left an indelible mark on the community.

As the cheers of victory fade and the greens return to tranquility, the impact of the Wine Cellar Tournament resonates far beyond the fairways. It stands as a testament to the power of sport, community, and generosity, all united in support of a brighter future for the youth of Providenciales.

2022 29TH CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP

RTCGC hosted its 29th Club Championship the last weekend of October experiencing good weather, beautiful course conditions, and great golf. The annual 36-hole stroke play event featured a strong field that competed in four men’s flights and one ladies’ division.

Fifteen-year-old Kurt Rivers shot rounds of 73, 73 for a two-day total of 146 to win the Men’s Club Championship by a narrow two shots over many times past champion Jumphol Srinark. Despite the 52-year difference in their ages they were tied through the first 30 holes of play. Kurt then pulled one shot ahead on the 13th hole and maintained that lead in an exciting duel until his birdie finish on 18 clinched his third straight Men’s Club Championship.

The Ladies Club Championship saw Brooke Rivers set the new course record for women on Saturday with a 67 only to follow it up on Sunday with the new, “NEW” course record 66. Brooke holed out from 90 yards on the 36th hole to win her sixth consecutive club championship in the finest of fashion. Andrea Todd had an excellent championship winning the low gross in the Ladies flight with scores of 78 and 79 while Carol Brown won the low net in the Ladies division.

Jumphol Srinark claimed the Senior Club Championship (golfers 55+) for the eighth time in the last nine years by bettering Rick Sanmiya who shot impressive rounds of 80 and 83. Simon Dobbs, Jamie McAnally, Rick Sanmiya, and Jumphol Srinark all played excellent golf capturing their respective men’s flights and all with convincing scores compared to their flight competitors. Syed Hassan won the best come back on day two by bettering his first day score by nine shots. Captain Ted Bayley organized, competed, and was on hand for the trophy presentations in what was an excellent event all around.

Thank you to the very supportive members led by our Club Captain Ted Bayley, and to The HAB Group for sponsoring the Club Championship. It was a great year!

Caribbean Amateur Open Round Up

Press Release:  August 8, 2022
Location: Providenciales, Turks & Caicos Islands
The 65th Annual Caribbean Amateur Golf Championship held in Providenciales, August 1st to 5th, 2022, at the Royal Turks & Caicos Golf Club with luxury accommodation generously provided by The Ritz-Carlton Resort, organized by Roberto Stipa of Desarrollos Hotelco Group is now complete. With an enormous amount of support from the amazing TCI community the five-day championship event was hugely successful. During the Opening Ceremony held at the golf clubhouse on August 2nd the eight visiting Caribbean nations, including Bahamas, Barbados, Cayman Islands, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Trinidad & Tobago, and USVI were warmly welcomed by His Excellency Governor Nigel Dakin, by Mr Alvin Parker, Director of the TCI Sports Commission and Fraser Dods, President of the TCI Golf Association. With the practice round also completed that day, the golf tournament was declared open and the highly competitive three round medal play championship event was ready to begin.

The course conditions were superb, thank you to the course superintendent, Tim Mack, and his greenkeeping crew who worked diligently during each day and the weeks prior to ready the course for this elite event. The Caribbean Golf Association President, Sydney Wolf from Puerto Rico and the CGA executive team were responsible for the course marking set-up, tournament reporting and officiating. The pin placements provided ample challenges for most competitors and the narrow fairways combined with the prevailing trade winds offered course management encounters for the long ball strikers with the talented players with good course management coming out on top. This annual championship is primarily a team event with the men vying for the coveted Hoerman Cup and the women competing for the George Teale Trophy. With the World Amateur Golf Ranking recognizing this as a major amateur championship, awards are also presented to the top players.
The Proshop Staff, led by Sean Wilson and Dave Douglas, worked hard organizing the golfers and team coaches each day delivering impeccable golf services throughout the week as the team players arrived dressed in daily tournament uniforms and the proud coaches displayed flags on their service golf carts in support of their teams. The Food and Beverage Staff at #19 Bar & Restaurant, led by Paul Slattery and Ronnie Rigby, offered outstanding services throughout the week starting with a delicious Caribbean Buffet for the Opening Ceremony and menu options during the week.

With several months of preparations to organize and manage this event, the TCI Golf Association Tournament Committee along with the dedicated Volunteers were very pleased to watch the Awards Ceremony on August 5th where Puerto Rico successfully defended the Hoerman Cup, and the lovely Jamaican woman’s team captured the George Teale Trophy this year. The individual awards went to Kelvin Hernandez of Puerto Rico who shot stellar rounds of 72, 68, 70 and Holly McLean of Cayman Islands with scores of 75, 72, 73. Team TCI finished the week in 7th place out of the nine competing nations in the Hoerman Cup and 5th place in the George Teale Trophy. In the individual divisions our top player, 15-year-old, Kurt Rivers finished in 14th place and 67-year-old JP Srinark finished in 32nd place out of 50 players. Top TCI woman player, Andrea Todd completed the event in 9th place out of 20 in the woman’s individual division.

Congratulations to all involved, in particular our very generous Sponsors and the R&A, without this combined effort hosting this golf championship would not have been possible. The event culminated with a Sunset Sail send off for the visiting Caribbean nations, sailing across Grace Bay with a chance encounter with our very own JoJo! A beautiful finish to an incredibly successful week by all accounts.

65th Annual Caribbean Golf Championships

The Turks & Caicos Islands Golf Association in union with the Caribbean Golf Association are thrilled to announce that the 65th Annual Caribbean Amateur Golf Championship will be held in Providenciales, August 1st to 5th, 2022, at the Royal Turks & Caicos Golf Club.

Nine Caribbean-member countries have committed to sending their ten-best amateur players to vie for the coveted Hoerman Cup – Men’s Division and George Teale Trophy – Ladies’ Division, in a highly competitive three round medal play event. Competing this year will be teams from Bahamas, Barbados, Cayman Islands, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Trinidad & Tobago, Turks & Caicos Islands and USVI.

The objective of the golf associations is to promote golf throughout their respective countries and, through the sport – to teach the principles of honesty, hard work and responsibility to young people taking up the game.  Through the years many junior golfers have risen through the junior ranks, some gaining college scholarships, and a select few – like Stephen Ames now residing in TCI – having very long and lucrative professional careers.

The past 2 years have seen a massive resurgence in the popularity of golf, and we are very proud that the TCIGA will host the major Caribbean event of the year. “We look forward to this event being a springboard for the fundraising and promotion of golf within the Turks & Caicos Islands for an enhanced junior development program,” states Fraser Dods, TCIGA President.

Our headline sponsor is the recently opened Ritz-Carlton. The Royal Turks & Caicos Golf Club has kindly cleared the golf schedule for this event to take place and we are indebted to the RTCGC for their support, without which this event would not happen. Dave Douglas, Director of Golf, states, “The Royal Turks & Caicos Golf Club would like to congratulate the Turks & Caicos Islands Golf Association, President Fraser Dods and his committee for their effort and vision required to host this 65th Championship. We are delighted to be their host venue for the third time over the last 23 years”.

The sponsorship list also includes: Grace Bay Car Rentals, Graceway IGA, Island Printing, The Wine Cellar, Beaches Turks & Caicos, Misick & Stanbrook, Seven Stars Resort & Spa, Stanbrook Prudhoe, Carlisle Supplies, Miller Simons O’Sullivan, Grant Thornton, BCQS, Grace Bay Resorts, Hartling Group, H20 Resort, Hugh G. 2022 11th Annual Wine Cellar Golf & Fishing Tournament

The 11th Annual Wine Cellar Golf & Fishing Tournament (WCGFT) took place March 10th through the 13th resulting in an enormous success!

Thursday kicked the tournament off with the Calcutta at Simone’s Bar & Grill where captains entered a friendly bidding war for rights of their respective vessels. Over the next two mornings fifteen boats set out from Leeward Cut in a mad dash to their favourite fishing spots. It was rough going both fishing days, but the excitement remained the same with the eventual fish auction offering the opportunity to purchase fresh Tuna, Mahi Mahi, and Wahoo at phenomenal prices. #19 Restaurant and Bar also got in on the act, purchasing a Wahoo for the restaurant.

The presentation ceremony followed, and the night featured the DJ playing all the favorites resulting in dancing, and tall fish tales about the “one that got away.”

Sunday afternoon’s Golf Tournament at Royal Turks & Caicos Golf Club was the highlight for all golf enthusiasts as an exciting round of 18-holes was framed with a perfect day of weather. The presentation ceremony followed with the top players awarded prizes ranging from trophies and golf bags to fine champagne or gift certificates. The traditional raffle draw took place with three amazing prizes up for grabs. A Breitling Endurance Pro watch (Jai’s), Dinner for 4 under the stars with complimentary wine (Bay Bistro), and Dinner for 4 Show/Buffet/Disco (Club Med).

Thanks to our host sponsors, namely Casablanca Casino, Cairsea Services Ltd., TCI Lotto, Carlisle Supply, Caicos Oil, ODMC, TCI Paint, NW Hamilton, Turtle Cove Marina & Royal Turks & Caicos Golf Club as well as to each additional sponsor whose unwavering generosity make the event successful each year. The International Team

The Provo Golf Ryder Cup, sponsored by Turks & Caicos Sotheby’s International Realty, witnessed another International Team victory by the large margin of 22.5 to 13.5. Team International retained control of the coveted cup during the two-day event which saw 48 golfers compete in the member favorite match play format. The conclusive win extended the International Team’s dominance to 19 to 8 over the impressive 27-year history as they now have a three-year win streak. Captain Graham Malyan and his Assistant Christina Pretorius led the Internationals who found themselves ahead 7.5 to 4.5 after the Saturday best ball format. The North American Captains, Rick Sanmiya and Josh Germain, were confident of a Sunday comeback however the International Team had different ideas winning Sunday’s singles matches handily (15 to 9) resulting in the nine-point victory.

The Provo Ryder Cup enjoyed wonderful golf course conditions, while the captains did a terrific job creating a competitive but fun atmosphere.

Each year the Provo Ryder Cup is eagerly anticipated, and the event kicked off with a lively Wednesday pairings party where the Captains set the stage for all 36 matches. Captain Pretorius helped Captain Malyan in a combined effort while Captain Sanmiya and recently crowned Club Champion Josh Germain matched strategy with the International team. Although a true team event it should be noted that the following twelve players captured a perfect 2 points by winning both their matches; Mary Eddy, Carol Brown, Brooke Rivers, Jim Gefucia, Ted Bayley, Grant Noble, Gregg Rivers, Gervin Simmons, Craig James, Martin Dawtry, Roberto Stipa, and Jo Pretorius.

Provo Golf Club, the Team Captain’s, and players would like to thank headline sponsor Joe Zahm of Turks & Caicos Sotheby’s International Realty for making the weekend a huge success. Sotheby’s has been intricately involved for the last seven years. Team North America will need to regroup as the International Team seems “INVINCIBLE” clearly ruling the Turks & Caicos golf scene! Perhaps Joe’s son Dylan Zahm will be ready to play for the North American team next year now that he has taken up this great game.
