If you live in Providenciales, you can’t have missed the recent deluge. The Turks and Caicos Met Office estimates 15 cm of rain over two days. While the rain might not have been ideal for our tourists, it has been great for the Royal Turks and Caicos Golf Club, part of the HAB Group. Our Golf Superintendent, Tim Mack, who has been here in Providenciales since 2010, comments on the positive outcome of the rain:

Enhanced Grass Health and Growth: The rain has alleviated negative soil issues like hydrophobicity and leached harmful sodium and bicarbonates from the rootzone. Additionally, the rain provided 100% coverage of the entire course, which the irrigation system cannot achieve, ensuring ample water for plant uptake. This has led to healthier, more vibrant grass, with increased nitrogen levels promoting above-ground growth.

Effective Water Management: While some fairways experienced temporary standing water, our course remained playable with no issues on the greens. Tim’s strategic installation of deep wells and subsurface drainage systems has been crucial in managing water levels and preventing prolonged waterlogging.

Reduced Irrigation Needs: The rainfall has significantly decreased our irrigation requirements, saving approximately 1.8 million gallons of water over six days. This not only conserves resources but also supports our commitment to environmental sustainability.

Improved Soil Quality: The heavy rain has effectively flushed sodium and bicarbonates from the rootzone, preventing nutrient deficiencies and promoting healthier plant growth. This natural process is something our irrigation system cannot replicate.

The recent rain has made our golf course even better, with our Platinum Paspalum grass greatly benefiting from the natural watering. The turf is more vibrant and greener, contributing to an enhanced playing experience for our members and guests. We’re grateful for the positive impact the rain has had on our course and look forward to continuing to provide top-quality conditions.
