We Start With Fishing

The 10th Annual Wine Cellar Golf & Fishing Tournament (WCGFT) took place on 5th March – 8th March, 2020 and was a rousing success! Thursday, 5th March the tournament kicked off with the Calcutta at Simone’s Bar & Grill where captains entered a friendly bidding war for rights for their respective vessels.

The next two mornings, 20 boats took off from Leeward Cut in a mad dash to get to their favorite fishing spots. The sky and sea were favorable and there was much fish brought in. The fish auction followed, and Restaurateurs and the general public had the opportunity to purchase fresh Tuna, Mahi Mahi and Wahoo at phenomenal prices.

At the presentation ceremony the excited winners of this year’s competition celebrated with their fellow anglers as trophies were hoisted, checks received and cheers of joy and camaraderie. There was excitement in the air as a brand new 2020 Jeep Wrangler Hybrid (Bayview Motors) was raffled off. The fun continued into the night with a live band, dancing and of course fish tales about the “one that got away”.

Sunday Golf

Sunday afternoon’s Golf Tournament (Royal Turks & Caicos Golf Club) was the highlight of the event for all Golf Enthusiasts. An exciting round of 18-hole golf made even more interesting with winds gusting in excess of 25mph. After a day on the links, the We Funk Junkanoo Band led us across the street to Opus Wine Bar & Grill where we feasted on delicious delicacies including fish caught at the tournament the day before.

The presentation ceremony followed, where the top players were awarded prizes that ranged from trophies and golf bags to fine Champagne and Gift Certificates. We continued with another Raffle Draw where a one of a kind TAG Heuer Golf Watch (Jai’s) was the prize that was claimed.

The mission of the Turks and Caicos Islands Football Association has always been to help the local community through its youth development football programs which are based on Providenciales, Grand Turk, South Caicos and North/Middle Caicos. With over 600 registered children there is a need for funds to fuel these programs. The 12th Annual Golf Scramble and Silent Auction took place on November 3rd and saw a new headline sponsor in the form of Scotiabank. Not only did they play the critical role as headline sponsor, but Scotiabank fielded a team led by Andy Dickson, Commercial Banking Manager, Scotiabank Turks and Caicos.

“At Scotiabank we believe in football!” said Curtis Knight, Country Head, Scotiabank Turks & Caicos. “Football has the unique ability to connect people all over the world. We also believe in the power of football as a vehicle for social change. We are committed to helping the communities that we serve to become better off. For this reason, Scotiabank is proud to support the Turks & Caicos Islands Football Association which engages youth across our islands giving them the opportunity to learn both football and the important life skills that team sports impart.”

The champion team of the day was comprised of Andrea Todd, Brooke Rivers, Blair Mason, and Dale Hodgkins who won in a tiebreaker with the net score of 54. Second place also at 54 was the team of Carol Brown, Chris Haggie, Mark Bowden and Simon Dobbs while third place was captured by Ernest Gardiner, Gervin Simmons, Marc Rawlins and Mike Flynn only a fraction back.
The TCIFA was grateful to receive many hole and silent auction donations. Thank you to F Chambers, Casablanca Casino, Como Parrot Cay, Amanyara, Turks and Caicos Collection, Ports Of Call Resort, Grace Bay Club, MillerSimonsO’Sullivan, Panoply Sports Fishing, Gordon’s Supply, Taste of Paradise, Custom Candii’s, Elite Brokerage, Rent-A-Ski, InterCaribbean Airways, Parkway Pest Solutions, Everyday Romance, Konk Apparel, Sip & Paint, Mythology, The Wellington Michael Collection, Business Solutions, Kandles By Katy, The Wine Cellar, Bay Bistro, Banyan Inn, Beaches Turks and Caicos, Airport Express, and Provo Golf Club.

TCIFA General Secretary, Oliver Smith indicated that “with the growth of our Youth Programs and the increase in international competitions for our Youth Teams, there is a consistent need for funding to allow our young players to compete and express themselves on the field. This event is critical for our growth and we once again thank Provo Golf Club, Scotiabank, and all our sponsors for sharing our dream by willingly assisting us in this initiative.”

The International Team

The Provo Golf Ryder Cup, sponsored by Turks & Caicos Sotheby’s International Realty, witnessed another International Team victory by the large margin of 22.5 to 13.5. Team International retained control of the coveted cup during the two-day event which saw 48 golfers compete in the member favorite match play format. The conclusive win extended the International Team’s dominance to 19 to 8 over the impressive 27-year history as they now have a three-year win streak. Captain Graham Malyan and his Assistant Christina Pretorius led the Internationals who found themselves ahead 7.5 to 4.5 after the Saturday best ball format. The North American Captains, Rick Sanmiya and Josh Germain, were confident of a Sunday comeback however the International Team had different ideas winning Sunday’s singles matches handily (15 to 9) resulting in the nine-point victory.

The Provo Ryder Cup enjoyed wonderful golf course conditions, while the captains did a terrific job creating a competitive but fun atmosphere.

Each year the Provo Ryder Cup is eagerly anticipated, and the event kicked off with a lively Wednesday pairings party where the Captains set the stage for all 36 matches. Captain Pretorius helped Captain Malyan in a combined effort while Captain Sanmiya and recently crowned Club Champion Josh Germain matched strategy with the International team. Although a true team event it should be noted that the following twelve players captured a perfect 2 points by winning both their matches; Mary Eddy, Carol Brown, Brooke Rivers, Jim Gefucia, Ted Bayley, Grant Noble, Gregg Rivers, Gervin Simmons, Craig James, Martin Dawtry, Roberto Stipa, and Jo Pretorius.

Provo Golf Club, the Team Captain’s, and players would like to thank headline sponsor Joe Zahm of Turks & Caicos Sotheby’s International Realty for making the weekend a huge success. Sotheby’s has been intricately involved for the last seven years. Team North America will need to regroup as the International Team seems “INVINCIBLE” clearly ruling the Turks & Caicos golf scene! Perhaps Joe’s son Dylan Zahm will be ready to play for the North American team next year now that he has taken up this great game.

19th Annual Jadot Cup

19th Annual Jadot Cup Raises $16,000 For Turks & Caicos Aids Awareness Foundation (TCAAF)

On Sunday, June 2nd, ironically nineteen teams took part in the TCAAF’s 19th Annual Jadot Cup as this year it enjoyed another rowdy crowd creating fun for all in attendance many of whom stayed late into the evening at Fairways Bar & Grill in an effort to change their scores while discussing golf swing theory. Eventually clear-headedness won out as Jadot Cup Chairman and TCAAF Director Terry Drummey announced that “The 19th Annual Jadot Cup was a great tournament resulting in a “funtastic” event which featured an amazing Friday dinner at OPUS Restaurant. We would like to thank everyone for their continued support!” Congratulations to the winning team members; Tony Garland, Mike Flynn, Gervin Simons, and Tom Adams. Terry then added, “An additional special thank you to all the companies that donated and to The Wine Cellar, Opus, Provo Golf Club with all their staff members who again made the weekend a huge success.”

Each year the Jadot weekend helps to raise awareness of the TCAAF and assists with funds towards its flagship project – the Edward Gartland Youth Centre in downtown, Providenciales. The Centre is open to young people age 10-18 and has registered an impressive 2000 plus youth. Funds raised by TCAAF assists the Youth Centre with their various extracurricular programs for the many who frequent the centre. Making a difference in the lives of the youth in the Turks & Caicos Islands through the various programs, including volleyball, basketball, tennis, arts & crafts, computers, and dance to name a few, is very rewarding. We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to our silent auction and hole sponsors at the 2019 Jadot Cup. This combined effort made it a huge success.

“About the TCAAF”
The TCAAF is an independent, non-profit organization formed in 2003 to combat the spread of HIV/AIDS in the Turks and Caicos Islands and its rippling, negative effects on the community through increased education and awareness. The primary focus of the TCAAF is to affect positive lifestyle and behavioral changes, especially among the youth as they are most at risk for HIV/AIDS. The TCAAF dedicates its time to fundraising efforts as well as implementing informative and fun programs that engage young people and help dispel myths about HIV/AIDS.
